     1.  ANTIBACTERIAL

These are agents that have specific effect to bacteria. Their action can be describes as bacteriostatic or bactericidal . Bacteriostatic means that it inhibits cell functions thus stopping reproduction and other cell processes, this gives the body time for the immune system to act and or leading to aging and later death of the bacteria. Bactericidal means the activity of the drug directly causes the death of the cell.

These drugs are classified according to how they cause their therapeutic action. The classifications include

a)        Inhibition of cell wall synthesis
b)        Inhibition of protein synthesis
c)        Inhibition of bacterial nucleic acid synthesis
