ONCOLOGY

It is a branch of medicine that specializes in the study and treatment of tumors and is almost only used when referring to tumors of cancerous nature. Malignant diseases have become more widely prevalent and almost a third of the total population will develop cancer at some point in their lifetime. Currently, treatment is given with either curative or palliative intent. Some advances are being made in the medical field to change the high mortality rate associated with cancer.
For most people, cancer implies certain death, although this is clearly not always the case. Physicians therefore have an obligation to be honest with their patients, combining the facts about the prognosis with compassion and understanding.
