ALKYLATING AGENTS
These drugs act by covalently
binding alkyl groups found on the DNA strands. This results in cross-link the
DNA strands interfering with DNA synthesis. They are among the earliest
cytotoxic agents to be discovered in the early 20th century, and
still hold a central key position in the treatment of cancer. Common drugs in
this class are
- Cyclophosphamide
- Chlorambucil
- Busulphan
- Mustine hydrochloride (HN2)
- Melphalan
- Nitrosoureas (eg Lomustine)
- Ifosfamide
- Treosulfan
