SULFONAMDE ANTIBACTERIALS
These are antibacterial drugs that inhibits
bacterial enzymes that generates bacterial cell folic acid(needed for DNA and
RNA synthesis) thus stopping the replication and normal function of bacteria.
This action is considered bacteriostatic.
Active against
most gram positive and gram negative bacteria.
Examples include;
- sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (Bactrim, Bactrim DS, Septra, Septra DS)
- sulfasalazine (Azulfidine, Sulfazine),
- sulfisoxazole,

Pregnancy category- C
Side effects
- dizziness
- lethargy
- diarrhea
- nausea
- vomiting
- headache
- serious skin rashes and
- anorexia.
